Language and music

It's so fun stimulating language with music! It can work with younger children or with older adults. Singing popular nursery rhymes etc. is a great way to help young children learn some of the cadence and rhymes in a language. Singing familiar and new songs with older adults can help stimulate language as well-- it can help older adults remember an experience with a certain song or help spark new neural pathways as adults learn new lyrics. What's your favorite song?

Happy New Year!

Image
It's the new year, and I'm excited to get going! I thought I might start out the year talking a little bit about behaviorism and behavioral strategies for helping children with communication. So superduperinc.com has some wonderful information for parents and practitioners. It's usually one of my go-to places for all the best and most fun little tidbits, helps, etc. This little screenshot from superduperinc.com gives a little overview of ABA, a therapeutic system that utilizes the idea of reinforcing positive behaviors. How could you use some practical ABA ideas at home? It could be fun to employ some ABA ideas in natural contexts like the home. According to information on the website asha.org, communication is a fairly fluid target and so might be harder to target using ABA methods, though it's still doable. Thanks to all my ABA friends, I have learned tons from you!
