What is stuttering? repetition of sounds, syllables, or words prolongations of sounds interruptions of speech-- blocks interjections may be accompanied by struggle/tension anxiety What causes it? runs in families developmental, develops age 2-6 neurogenic-- stroke, brain injury How is it diagnosed? some stutters are more typical-- repeating whole words, repeating phrases, interjections some less typical-- part-word repetitions, sound repetitions, blocks, prolongations, tension, struggle, avoidance How is it treated? depends on age/goals of person preschoolers Lidcombe-- positive reinforcement for fluency and acknowleding stutters. indirect, recasting, rephrasing, building resilience, environmental modifications-- talking slowly older-- mimimize difficulty communicating in various situations, self-advocacy, disclosing, being more comfortable with stuttering, talking about stuttering, being able to enjoy communication no matter the level of fluency, improving self-confidence, speech modification includes fluency shaping (— easy onset, light contact, rate control— perhaps DAF (see cluttering video), stuttering devices speech easy, stuttering modification-- reduce physical tension-- prep set, pull-out, cancellation.
